God is at the forefront of everything at St. Mary’s Academy. Every school day begins and ends with prayer and students are encouraged to develop a close relationship with God.

Opportunities for spiritual growth include monthly Masses, retreats and Religion classes. Every student also has access to the school’s Chaplain, who not only offers Masses but consultation and the Sacrament of Confession.

The St. Mary’s Academy student learns to model Christian behavior both in and outside of school. Community service projects, peer mediation and fellowship activities further enhance her spiritual development.

From the moment that a young woman steps on campus, she is taught that not only is she special, she is a “Daughter of the King.”

RELIGION

Students are encouraged to be true Christians and are guided each day in an enriching setting that focuses on the formation of the whole person. Recognizing the infinite, intrinsic, God-given value of each individual, students are invited to engage in an age-appropriate and challenging exploration of their faith, and to mature in an understanding of their relationship with self, others, and God.

ENGLISH

The English curriculum concentrates on grammar and communication skills. Students focus on writing, listening skills, and vocabulary development.

READING

The reading program in the Middle School concentrates on the development of critical reading skills while providing an introduction to literature. The program also endeavors to promote life-long reading habits. Topics include word analysis, vocabulary development, comprehension techniques and study skills.

MATHEMATICS

The Middle School Mathematics program is designed for students to master the computations of whole numbers, integers, decimals, and fractions. Students will be exposed to many problem-solving experiences, rich in real-life situations. The program also provides the traditional experiences in math for the mastery of the computations.

SOCIAL STUDIES

A goal of this course is to encourage students to be aware of their responsibilities as a member of society. It builds on the connections students make from their own lives with some global issues that are explored. Students learn how to interpret and analyze what has happened in the past, and what is happening in the present to make better choices to lessen conflict and promote reconciliation for themselves and for their society in the future. Students examine their identity, responsibilities, contributions, and consequences of their choices within their social networks.

SCIENCE

A goal is to nurture scientifically informed students ready to begin interpreting and analyzing biological issues and their consequences for the human race and the environment. Students will develop their understanding of the scientific processes of observation, experimentation, data collection, and interpretation of results. Activities are designed to develop an appreciation for all living things and an awareness of their environmental role in the scheme of life.

ART

The objectives of the art program include developing the creative capacity of all students, stimulating sensory awareness, understanding formal artistic elements and the principles of art.

MUSIC

Understanding that music is integral to the expressive and communicative nature of human beings is a primary focus of the music program at St. Mary’s Academy.

 

ELECTIVES

In grades 7 and 8, students elect classes for enrichment such as Art, Band, Chorus, French and Spanish.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The purpose of the course is to instruct students to understand how to perform skills basic to all sports. Students will learn to appreciate positive interaction by demonstrating sportsmanship. Students will also understand the health benefits of participating in lifetime sports. Finally, students will appreciate and engage in activities.
