Gibson & Doss Lead St. Mary’s Academy Graduates
Thirty-nine students received diplomas from Sr. Clare of Assisi Pierre, president of St. Mary’s Academy and Sr. Jennie Jones, principal, in ceremonies marking the 128th graduation of St. Mary’s Academy, May 16 at Austin Gymnasium. Father Jeff Harvey, C.M and Rev. Mr. Daniel H. Green celebrated the Baccalaureate Mass that preceded the graduation ceremonies. Dr. Kim Vaz, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Xavier University of Louisiana served as the Commencement speaker.
The members of the Class of 2013 have been accepted to more than 40 colleges and universities and have garnered more than 1.2 million dollars in scholarship awards.
Brandi Gibson, daughter of Brian Gibson and Glenda Gettridge-Perry of New Orleans, was valedictorian. Throughout her years at St. Mary’s Academy, she maintained both President’s Honor Roll and Renaissance Star status.
Gibson, a TOPS Honors Scholar, earned the highest average awards in English and Spanish. She was a member of several extracurricular activities including the SMA Ambassadors, National Honor Society, Key Club and volleyball team. Additionally, Gibson served as president of the Student Council.
Gibson was awarded more than $462,590 in scholarship offers to Tuskegee University, Fish University, Clark-Atlanta University, Dillard University and Southeastern University. She will attend Southeastern University in Hammond, LA. where she will pursue a major in athletic training.
Salutatorian was Alexis Doss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tyrone Doss of New Orleans, LA.
Doss, A TOPS Scholar, consistently maintained Principal’s Honor Roll and Renaissance Star status throughout her years of study at SMA. Actively involved in several extracurricular activities, she served as a president of the senior class and co-captain of the Cougarette Dance Team. Additionally, Doss was a member of the SMA Ambassadors, National Honor Society and chorus.
Doss was awarded a scholarship to Fisk University. In the fall, she plans to attend Clark-Atlanta University, majoring in psychology.
Honor graduates were Domonique Dickerson, Alexis Davis, Chelsea Stevens and Tangi Jones.
