St. Mary’s Academy, 6905 Chef Hwy, New Orleans: (504) 245‐0318 Puppet Festival Showcases Student Work
St. Mary’s Academy will hold a Puppet Festival Friday, December 18 at 9:00 AM in the school's library. The event is a culmination of ten weeks of work by the students with resident artist Karen Konnerth, of Calliope Puppets. The students grades pre‐kindergarten through third
have learned stories, constructed simple puppets, and are now rehearsing their stories for performance. Each of the thirteen classes will present a different tale, with all class members participating in some way – manipulating puppets, acting, or
being part of the “sound effects orchestra”. Ms Konnerth works with the teachers to supplement curriculum focus, providing alternate ways to engage students in classroom learning. This year, the Pre‐Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade
teachers asked Ms Konnerth to work with traditional tales, as the teachers express that they find that many children are no longer learning these elemental components of our culture. These classes will present tales such as “Chicken Little”,
“The Billy Goats Gruff”, etc. Second Grade will present American folk tales, with one class having written their own version about the New Orleans folk character, “Annie Christmas”. Third Grade will present Native American tales, to accompany their
social studies unit.
