Mayoral Candidates Visit SMA

With the mayoral elections right around the corner, people are listening intently trying to see what candidate peaks their interest. With that fact in mind, St. Mary’s Academy and the New Orleans NAACP Youth Council partnered together to present the 2010 Youth Against Violence Forum on Wednesday, January 27 at Austin Gymnasium.

On hand for the forum were three of the Mayoral Candidates including Troy Henry, James Perry and Robert Couhig.  Sending representatives to the forum were candidates Mitch Landrieu and John Georges. A panel of students from St. Mary's Academy, St. Augustine High School, St. Mary's Dominican, Benjamin Franklin, and New Orleans  Math and Science High School questioned the candidates regarding their plans to address violence, education, and youth programs in the City of New Orleans.  Leading the discussion was Dr. Raphael Cassimere of the University of New Orleans.

Following the forum, students were given the opportunity to register to vote and to travel around the gym to visit with the various social service agencies and colleges in attendance.
