Maryites For Life Head to Washington, D.C.- Updated

Six students and three faculty members are attending the March for Life Rally, a peaceful protest of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in 1973. The rally will take place in Washington, D.C. January 20-24. Attending this year's rally will be Kristy Tran, Thu Vo, Bria Whiticar, Troynicka Conrad, Kiara DeRouen and Dezire Sandifer. They will be accompanied by Mr. Adam Ganucheau, moderator of Maryites for Life; Sister Anne Marie Khoung and Sr. Judith Therese Barial.

Trip Log By Adam Ganucheau:
1/20/2010

We've reached Washington safely. The girls have had a long day but a good day.  Our Maryites have quickly become friends with groups from Academy of the Sacred Heart and Brother Martin. We traveled through Louisiana, up to the hills of Tennessee, and up to Virginia. We've had a few stops along the way, and we've even celebrated Bria Whiticar's 17th birthday. We're looking forward to a full day tomorrow, with a Capitol Tour, a visit to the Holocaust museum, and the Louisiana Right to Life "Geaux Forth" conference for high school students. We miss everyone in New Orleans and want to thank everyone for their prayers!

Good morning, We had our first full day in Washington today. The girls, the sisters and I traveled first to the Capitol, where it was rumored that President Obama was there, so security took a little longer than normal. The girls enjoyed seeing the Capitol and where history is constantly being made. We then headed to the Holocaust museum, where we visited the special exhibit on Nazi propoganda. Several of our seniors met a Holocaust survivor, and they were really touched by her story. Our evening ended with Geaux Forth, the Louisiana Right to Life youth rally. We met teens from all over our state, and learned effective tools for Maryites for Life. Congressman Cao was also in attendance and met with our group. Dezire Sandifer, our club president, shared her story with our bus during evening prayer. Dezire's friend faced a dilemma: have an abortion or get kicked out of her house. Through Dezire and her mother's prayer and support, her friend chose life and they will be celebrating the baby 's first birthday at the end of January! As she walked back to her seat, she was glowing as her peers patted her on the back and said how proud they were of her. Today is one of our longest days, and one of the coldest while we'll be here. Today marks the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and we will be part of the thousands marching in our capitol today. We start today with Mass with Archbishop Aymond, and move to the March. We miss our family and friends in New Orleans, but we're excited for our witness. We'll be sending pictures as soon as we can.

Good morning, Friday marked one of the best days of the trip, and the true purpose of our pilgramage. On the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we began with Mass with 600 pilgrims at Blessed Sacrament church in Alexandria. Archbishop Aymond traveled in our bus, and he quickly made friends with the sisters. The girls were excited to meet him as well. We got to the Mall where 200,000 pro-lifers were gathered. I was excited to see many friends from Jesuit High School. The march was beautiful, and our girls were amazed at the size and the diversity of the marchers. The forecast was rainy, but Sister Khuong prayed and it didn't rain all day. After the March, we headed to Georgetown, where we had dinner as a group followed by free time in the Georgetown area. Today is our last full day in Washington, beginning with tours of the WWII memorial, Vietnam memorial, Lincoln memorial, and several Smithsoian museums. Some of the girls are even planning on trying ice skating for the first time! We end our day with vigil Mass at the National Basillica, one of my favorite churches in the U.S. After Mass, we'll be heading back to New Orleans. See everyone soon! P.s. The girls loved seeing the Lincoln Memorial, and we traveled as a SMA group to the National Archives and American History museum. Unfortunately, we missed out on ice skating. We had an eventful but safe bus ride back to the city. Thanks again for everyone's prayers!
