Middle School Student Travels to Washington, D.C.
Kaitlyn Dumas, a seventh grader at St. Mary’s Academy, was one of 99 students nationwide selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, which took place February 27-March 4 in Washington, D.C. Chosen for her leadership potential and academic performance, Dumas was nominated by her school administrator Pamela Greenwood. According to the organization’s website, “The Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) helps scholars develop and sharpen their leadership skills by examining the leaders of the past and empowering them to make a positive social impact in their community and the world.” In support of its mission, members of the U.S. Congress and over 50 embassies representing countries around the world serve on CYLC's Honorary Board of Advisors. Upon her arrival in Washington, D.C., Dumas participated in daily workshops and visited several museums and monuments including the Museum of American History, the Lincoln and Vietnam Veterans and Korean War Memorials. Additionally highlights of her trip included a tour of Capitol Hill and a visit of historic Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, a pivotal location in the development of the United States. “Kaitlyn is a true leader with outstanding academic achievement,” said St. Mary’s Academy Middle School Coordinator Pamela Greenwood adding that Dumas possesses a strong will and a willingness to help others. “She is the epitome of what a true Maryite is all about.” Kaitlyn is the daughter of Kim and Michael Dumas of New Orleans.
