Kathy Taylor Ancar

When her mother jokingly commented to Sr. Maria Gonzales during an Alumnae function a few years ago, “this girl bleeds blue and gold,” she wasn’t too far off. Following in the footsteps of many cousins and aunts who attended the Academy dating back to the 50’s, Kathy Taylor Ancar, ’76 has been a Maryite all her life.

It was no wonder that she would one day return to her Alma Mater to work alongside many of the Sisters of the Holy Family who had helped mold her into the person she is today. Unfortunately, her tenure was short lived. After serving as Director of Alumnae Affairs and Web editor for five years, following Hurricane Katrina, Kathy regrettably, was unable to return to her beloved St. Mary’s Academy. She landed in Tallahassee, Florida securing a position as a Program Director with the Florida Department of Education where she oversees the Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services’ Clearinghouse Information Center.

The Clearinghouse Information Center operates a resource center that provides parents, educators, and other Floridians with access to materials about exceptional student education, student services, juvenile justice education, early intervention, parent and professional partnerships, and many other topics.

Kathy has always had a passion for writing (thanks to Sr. Leona Bruner and Sr. Joseph Angela) and photography. She has served as online editor for New Orleans-based THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Magazine for over ten years, and is currently enrolled at Tallahassee Community College taking multimedia graphics and digital photography classes.

Kathy’s articles have appeared in Louisiana Cookin Magazine, THE BLACK COLLEGIAN, The Louisiana Weekly, and The African-American Village. She is currently developing a Website and is researching information for a children’s book.

Kathy is most proud of her sons, Blaine and Devon Dejoie, and her “smile,” granddaughter, De’Ana Moreno Dejoie, affectionately called Yani. She recently married her high school sweetheart Alvin Ancar of New Orleans.
