2 nd Annual Day of Empowerment For Women

Under colorful umbrellas on the beautiful sunny morning of April 19, 2008, Maryites and friends, young and old, gathered for spiritual rejuvenation, complete with good music, uplifting messages, and a sumptuous buffet.

Our dynamic speakers for the event were Deadra Coleman with

Whole Food Company, Dr. Effie Mouton, Stress Management

Director of Louisiana Spirit, and Saronne Sunrae with Sun Braids

International; all of whom delivered powerful and inspirational messages on the importance of maintaining good health-through proper nutrition, stress management and the art of affirming the unique beauty and goodness in ourselves

While guest dined, our fabulous friends & alumnae models showed off cool, cute and sassy summer fashion! Special hats and accessories, provided by the “Treasure Chest Boutique” were a big hit!

Poet and Author of “Red Beans and Ricely Yours”, Dr. Mona Lisa Saloy shared poetry that made us laugh, say amen, and just flow with the rhythm of her words.

Popular New Orleans actor, Patricia McGuire Hill dazzled us with her performance of Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman”. She was phenomenal!!!

A great musical lineup by Connie & Dwight Fitch topped off the event!

We’re definitely looking forward to next year!!

Demolition Ceremony

On June 16 th, 2008 hundreds of loyal daughters gathered to say goodbye to the buildings

that once served us so well. St. Mary’s Academy Demolition Ceremony was a bitter-sweet experience for Maryites & friends.

Sister Eva Regina Martin, Superior General of the Sisters of the Holy Family, other representatives of her congregation, Sister Jenny Jones, principal of St. Mary’s, faculty, staff and summer school students, were all present for the ceremony.

Councilwoman, Cynthia Willard-Lewis, and other members of the city council, representatives of FEMA and the director of Sewerage & Water Board, Marcia St. Martin were with us; all pledging their support of our rebuilding efforts.

The heavens cried with us, as we watched the giant ball plunge into our once so beautiful school. In spite of all, we know that St. Mary’s Academy will be restored more beautiful and better equipped to serve future generations of Maryites.

The event was covered by all of our local TV stations.

We had some fun! Right in our own back yard! Can’t wait til next year!
